We Won't Back Down

Yesterday in California we experienced the sadness of learning that the State Supreme Court has decided to uphold Proposition 8 and its language of fear and ignorance toward same-sex couples. Some day those individuals and institutions who supported this misguided initiative will look back with regret and sorrow at their inability to open their minds and hearts and the harm and destruction they continue to leave in their wake.

Nevertheless, in the meantime, as long as these attitudes persist, those of us who have the ability to know and see the truth of the matter have the responsibility to keep fighting and keep making our stories known. As Dr. Mel White, founder of Soulforce has said, if it takes years, if it takes decades, if it takes a hundred years or more, we will not give up until we help our all our sisters and brothers know that it's okay for all of God's beloved children to be who they are and to love and be loved in a committed relationship that serves the good of both families and society. Until that time we will keep fighting nonviolently each and every day, letting God's goodness touch our hearts and transform us more and more into witnesses of love, peace, and hope for our churches and places of worship, our communities, our society, and our world.

Peace,

Padre Chuck
