Another prophetic figure in the Catholic tradition who has worked to promote acceptance of LGBT people in the church is the British theologian James Alison. A former Dominican priest and active theologian and lecturer, Alison's insights into the essence of the Christian faith have been favorably compared to those of C.S. Lewis.
For today's reflection I'd like to share a piece by Alison entitled Letter to a Young Gay Catholic. It's a moving reflection on the challenges of being oneself and holding onto one's faith in the midst of religious attitudes that still sometimes alienate and exclude. Alison's writing is challenging and thought provoking in many ways but also rewards its careful reader, both intellectually and spiritually. Be sure to check out some of his other articles on the site where the Letter is posted.
Peace,
P. Chuck
